Using the adapted signs encourages the children to listen to their surroundings, which promotes better communication; it also encourages the development of spoken language as the children are given tactile cues to the meaning of words they otherwise couldn't understand.
The woman who devised the language, Mrs Mary Lee, did so because her children were visually impaired and needed a better method of communication. As a result of her hard work with former colleague Lindi Macwilliam MBE, Mrs Lee, who is still a principle teacher at the school for blind, was recently awarded the Scottish Education Award 2010 for Lifetime Achievement
